Established in Newark, N.J. (Essex County) in 1880 to provide free medical care for "indigent persons suffering from diseases of the eye and ear." Founders included Dr. Charles J. Kipp (1838-1911), who first opened a special eye and ear clinic at St. Michael's Hospital (Newark) in 1870, Robert H. Ballantine, William Clark, Frederick Frelinghuysen, and Dr. William Rankin.
